King Street

Location: Manchester, England

architect: buttress architects

  • Designed by Alfred Waterhouse — the architect behind Manchester Town Hall and London's Natural History Museum — the former Prudential Assurance Building at 76–80 King Street is one of Manchester's finest Victorian landmarks. Built between 1888 and 1895, its red brick and terracotta facade of ornate turrets and gables remains a defining presence along the city's historic premium retail and banking district.

Darwen Terracotta carried out a full facade recreation of this Grade II listed building with new designs, faithful to the facade, including the decorative columns and two ornate entrance arch surrounds.

The building sits within the King Street Conservation Area, and the restoration has helped secure the long-term integrity of one of Manchester's most recognisable streetscapes.
