∞ Blue (Infinity Blue)
Location: eden project, Cornwall, UK
Architect: Studio Swine
-
Standing almost 9 metres tall and weighing 20 tonnes, ∞ Blue is an extraordinary collaboration between Studio Swine and our team, a sculptural installation honouring cyanobacteria, one of the smallest living organisms on Earth and the first to develop oxygenic photosynthesis nearly 3 billion years ago.
The steel-framed structure is clad in deep blue, oxide-glazed ceramic tiles, handcrafted by us to a textural pattern generated by reaction-diffusion algorithms found throughout the natural world, echoing the markings seen on zebras and coral. The glaze itself draws on Cornish clay and local mining history, grounding the piece firmly in its surroundings.
The sculpture forms the centrepiece of Invisible Worlds, a new permanent exhibition within the Eden Project's Core building, and incorporates 32 vortex cannons releasing scented smoke rings developed in collaboration with Paris perfume house Givaudan, each fragrance evoking a different chapter in the story of Earth's atmosphere.
It's a project that pushed our glazing and tile-making expertise into genuinely new territory, working at the intersection of science, art, and material craft.
