Lewis Jones - Poured Earth - The Art in Manufacturing

We are delighted to highlight the work of designer Lewis Jones, founder of Matter at hand, and his recent creative exchange with Darwen Terracotta through the National Festival of Making’s Art in Manufacturing residency.

During his time with us, Lewis explored the qualities of clay in new and thought-provoking ways, focusing on how natural materials can shape more responsible building practices. His project investigates unfired earth-based construction, blending clay with organic fibres and repurposed materials to reconsider how architecture can minimise waste and reduce environmental impact.

The resulting installation presents a series of experimental forms — each one demonstrating how traditional materials can be adapted to meet modern sustainability goals. His work invites us to look again at long-established craft processes and imagine how they might contribute to the greener buildings of tomorrow.

For Darwen Terracotta, this collaboration reflects our commitment to supporting innovation that respects both heritage and the planet. By partnering with designers who challenge conventions and prioritise responsible making, we continue to advocate for a built environment that safeguards the world future generations will inherit.

We are proud to stand behind creative efforts like Lewis’s — projects that push our industry toward smarter, more sustainable possibilities.
